I.M. Pei's works are mainly public buildings and cultural and educational buildings, belonging to modernist buildings, which make good use of steel, concrete, glass and stone. Because of the characteristics of glass itself-transparency and reflection, and the transparency of glass will not block and damage the facade of the original building, it not only conforms to Bayes' pursuit of sunshine, but also makes the original building complex not weakened in vision and space principle, and can fully express the architect's architectural thoughts. Coupled with light and human movement, the whole space is endowed with vitality. Natural light flows into the room through transparent glass materials, bringing warmth and agility to everything in the room. Steel mesh not only plays a supporting and bearing role.

Bayesian pays attention to the study of concrete, excavates its mechanical characteristics and visual expressive force, integrates structure and decoration in architectural design, and is faithful to the expressive force of material texture, thus pushing the application of concrete to a new height. In the works, we can often see that it makes full use of the plasticity of concrete to make a sculptural spiral staircase. The most typical one is the spiral staircase in the inner courtyard of Iversen Art Museum, which can be regarded as a sculpture for people to walk up and down. Bay also fully demonstrated the mechanical properties of concrete suitable for cantilever in the Iverson Art Museum and the Dallas City Hall Building.

geometry

I.M. Pei has made immortal contributions to the development of geometric composition of modernist architecture. If Mies and Corbusier made great achievements in refining geometry, I.M. Pei enriched the geometric composition on the basis of inheriting modernist architects, thus opening up a new road for rigid modernist architecture.
