Wuhan University of Technology, referred to as Wuhan University of Technology for short, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC), a national "double-class" construction university, and a "2 1 1 project" construction university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It has been selected into the 985 Innovation Platform of Engineering Superiority Discipline, "11Plan", the education and training plan for outstanding engineers, the national postgraduate plan for building a high-level university, the new engineering research and practice project, the scholarship receiving institution of China government for overseas students in China, and the national cultural quality education base for college students.

The school started from 1898 when Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Huguang, invited the Qing government to establish Hubei Technical School. On May 27th, 2000, it was formed by the merger of Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Jiaotong University and Wuhan Automobile Institute. Wuhan University of Technology originated from 1948 China People's Liberation Army Northeast Military Region Ministry of Industry Professional School. 1978 was identified as a national key institution, 1985 was renamed Wuhan university of technology, and 1998 was transferred from the former state building materials bureau to the Ministry of education as the director. Wuhan Jiaotong University originated from 1946 National Maritime Vocational School. After inheritance and development, it was renamed Wuhan Jiaotong University on 1993, which was under the former Ministry of Communications. Wuhan Institute of Automobile 1958 originated from Wuhan Institute of Technology. After inheritance and development, it was renamed Wuhan University of Automobile Technology on 1995, and it was affiliated to the former China Automobile Industry Group Corporation.

As of June 2022, the school covers an area of more than 4,000 mu, with a total construction area of 1 953,000 square meters. There are 24 colleges (departments) offering 100 undergraduate majors; At present, there are 7 postdoctoral research stations 17, 22 doctoral programs in first-class disciplines, 45 master programs in first-class disciplines, 24 master degree authorization categories and 39 master degree authorization fields; There are more than 36,000 undergraduates, more than 20,000 doctoral and master students and more than 900 international students. There are 5,340 faculty members.
