North China Electric Power University, referred to as Huadian for short, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). It is established by the board of directors of State Grid Corporation, China Electric Power Enterprise Federation and other 12 super-large power groups and the Ministry of Education. It is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University Energy Science Research Institute, the Global Energy Internet University Alliance, the North University of Science and Technology Alliance and the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance led by China.

The school was founded in Beijing, 1958, formerly known as Beijing Institute of Electric Power, and has long been managed by the national electric power department. 1969 moved to Handan, Hebei province, 1970 moved to Baoding, renamed Hebei electric power institute, 1978 was approved by the State Council as a national key university. In the same year 1999, it was renamed as North China Electric Power Institute.
