The predecessor of Ningxia Medical University is Ningxia Medical College, which was founded in 1958. 1962 was renamed Ningxia university medical department. From 65438 to 0972, Shanghai Railway Medical College moved to Yinchuan, merged with the Medical Department of Ningxia University, and rebuilt Ningxia Medical College. In 2002, Ningxia Health School and Ningxia Nursing School merged into Ningxia Medical College. In August 2008, the school was renamed Ningxia Medical University.

There are more than 5,600 teaching staff and medical staff (including affiliated hospitals directly under the Central Government), including 905 full-time teachers and 723 people with associate senior titles or above. Double-hired academicians 1 person, doctoral supervisors 5 1 person, and master supervisors 660 people. Covering an area of *** 1700 mu, it has 13 teaching institutions, 13 teaching and research institutions, 12 affiliated hospitals, 20 teaching hospitals, more than 70 practice hospitals and practice teaching bases.
