1923 changed to National Northwest University. 1937, the National Peking University, Beiping Normal University, Beiyang Institute of Technology and Beiping Research Institute, which moved westward to Shaanxi, formed the National xi 'an Temporary University. 1938 was renamed as National Northwest United University, and 1939 was renamed as National Northwest University. After the founding of New China, it is a comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. 1950 changed its name to Northwest University.

The school has three campuses: Taibai Campus, Taoyuan Campus and Chang 'an Campus, covering a total area of more than 2,360 mu. At present, there are 24 colleges (departments) and graduate schools, and 89 undergraduate majors, of which 32 are selected as national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites. At present, the school has 24 first-level disciplines authorized by doctor's degree, 36 first-level disciplines authorized by master's degree, and 17 professional degree authorization categories.
At present, there are 1 national key disciplines (covering 5 two disciplines), 4 two disciplines national key disciplines and 1 national key disciplines (training), and 24 post-doctoral research stations. The school has 7 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 7 national talent training bases and 1 national college students' cultural quality education bases.
