There are six main types of university renaming in China:

First, the names of schools and vocational and technical colleges have been changed to colleges, which are basically schools that have been upgraded from junior colleges to undergraduate courses.

Second, the college was renamed as a university, including some famous colleges. I also feel that the name of the college is not "tall" and I hope to change it to a university; For example, Beijing Broadcasting Institute was renamed China Communication University, and Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel was renamed University of Science and Technology Beijing. Although the name has been changed for more than ten years, the familiar people are still called "Guangyuan" and "Gangyan".

Third, independent colleges were decoupled from parent schools, and independent undergraduate course School was renamed.

Fourth, the school wants to get rid of the image of some traditional industries and have a fashionable school name. More popular words are "railway" to "transportation", "aquatic products" to "ocean", "geology" to "engineering", "steel" to "science and technology", "meteorology" to "information" ... even if there are no unpopular words before, they should be changed into popular words.

For example, Xi Institute of Mining and Technology, 1999 was renamed Xi Institute of Science and Technology, and in 2003 it was renamed Xi 'an University of Science and Technology. In 2003, Lanzhou Railway Institute was renamed Lanzhou Jiaotong University; In 2008, Shanghai Fisheries University was renamed Shanghai Ocean University.

Fifth, move closer to a larger place name. The universities named after the city were all changed to provincial names, such as Yueyang Normal University, which was renamed Hunan Institute of Science and Technology; Even if it can't be named as a province, at least it should be changed to half a province. For example, Yantai Teachers College was renamed ludong university.

Even trying to take the name of the big area, if it doesn't work, take the name of the big area variant. For example, Hebei United University was renamed North China University of Science and Technology, and Jilin Normal University was renamed Beihua University after the merger. Sichuan University of Science and Technology merged with chengdu normal university and was renamed xihua university.

In China, the vast majority of China people take it for granted that "colleges" are worse than "universities", local universities with prefecture-level names are worse than provincial universities, and normal universities are worse than comprehensive universities.
