Zunyi Medical University is the first medical undergraduate college founded by China Communist Party after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. It is a pilot university established by the National Health and Wellness Committee and the People's Government of Guizhou Province, a first-class discipline construction university in Guizhou Province, and selected as a basic capacity-building project for universities in the central and western regions.

There are 6 national key clinical specialties, 37 provincial key clinical specialties (disciplines), 15 national training bases, 1 1 provincial medical control centers, 14 provincial specialty training bases and 3 national clinical research center sub-centers. There are 3 national standardized training bases for specialists and 25 national resident training bases, including 3 national key resident training bases.

The affiliated hospital of the school is the first three-level first-class general hospital in Guizhou, and it is the construction unit of the national project to improve the diagnosis and treatment ability of difficult diseases (the direction of early diagnosis and accurate treatment of malignant tumors). Perforator flap and minimally invasive cervical spine technology are in the leading position in China, and digestive tract endoscope and neuroendoscope early cancer screening technology are in the leading position in southwest China. It is the only third-class hospital with heart transplant qualification in Guizhou Province.
