Xi Jiaotong University is the earliest well-known institution of higher learning in China and a key university directly under the Ministry of Education.

The school is a key construction unit during the Seventh Five-Year Plan and the Eighth Five-Year Plan. It was one of the first batch of national "2 1 1" and "985" project construction schools. In 20 17, it was selected as a Class A construction university in the national first-class university construction list, and eight disciplines were selected as first-class construction disciplines.

In 2022, it was selected as the second round of "double first-class" construction universities in China, and eight disciplines were selected as "double first-class" construction disciplines.

The school is a comprehensive research university covering 9 disciplines, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy and art, with 29 colleges (departments and centers), 9 undergraduate colleges and 3 directly affiliated hospitals.

There are 66 faculty members17, including 38 full-time teachers18. Among the teachers, 429 were selected into the national major talent projects such as Academician and Jie Qing, 5/kloc-0 national innovation teams won awards, and 453 experts made outstanding contributions to the country and enjoyed special government allowances.
