Northwest University for Nationalities is located in Lanzhou, an important node city of the Belt and Road Initiative. It is the first national institution of higher learning founded after the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC). Under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, it is a public institution jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the People's Government of Gansu Province, and a high-level university construction unit determined by Gansu Province.

The school has the right to award bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and doctor's degrees. At present, there are 25 teaching and research institutions with disciplines and specialties covering economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management, art, etc. There are 73 undergraduate majors, 2 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 3 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees in two disciplines and 0/6 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degrees. For 3 1 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are more than 30,000 teachers and students.

The school has 1 group for outstanding contributions to the great development of western China, 1 group for Huang Danian-style teachers in national institutions of higher learning, 2/group for advanced professional and technical talents, 1 group for national teaching team and 1 group for national model workers, and 5 experts specially invited by the government of the State Council. There are 27 provincial and ministerial key disciplines. Ethnology is the dominant discipline, while China language and literature, computer science, national information technology and bioengineering are the characteristic disciplines in the construction of "double first-class" disciplines in Gansu Province.
