Hunan University of Science and Technology, located in Xiangtan City, is a university supported by the Hunan Provincial People's Government, the State Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the former state administration of work safety, the national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in the Midwest" and the "National First-class University" in Hunan Province.

The school was formed by the merger of Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Normal College, the second undergraduate normal university in Hunan Province in 2003. Its school-running history can be traced back to Xiangbei Institute of Architecture, which was founded in 1949.
Xiangtan Institute of Technology was founded in 1978, formerly known as Xiangtan Coal Institute, and is an undergraduate college directly under the former Ministry of Coal Industry. 198 1 renamed Xiangtan Institute of Mining and Technology, 1997 renamed Xiangtan Institute of Technology. Xiangtan Teachers College was founded in 1958, formerly known as Xiangtan Teachers College. 1985 was upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Xiangtan Teachers College.
As of July 2022, the school covers an area of 3,004.67 mu, with a building area of11616,000 square meters; At present, there are 20 teaching colleges, continuing education colleges, international education colleges and Xiaoxiang College (independent colleges), offering 98 undergraduate majors.
