The following is a professional introduction of Rice University in the field of civil and environmental engineering for your understanding.
1. Undergraduate course
At the undergraduate level, Rice University offers bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees in civil and environmental engineering.
Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering
This degree is for students interested in civil and environmental engineering. Civil and environmental engineering contains many different aspects, and students can choose one of them. The purpose of this degree is to train students to engage in the engineering industry in the future, to provide students with innovative and challenging bachelor of engineering science teaching, and to provide great freedom of choice.
The Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Science in Rice University has been certified by the ABET Engineering Accreditation Committee, which provides an introduction to this field. You can choose one of the following four aspects:
Environmental engineering-air and water quality, transportation theory, simulation, energy;
Hydrology and water resources-watershed and aquifer management, flood forecasting, data analysis, geographic information system;
Structural engineering and mechanics-structural analysis, mechanics, design, matrix method;
Urban infrastructure, reliability and management-transportation system, complex urban system, soil mechanics, engineering economics, management.
qualification authentication
The Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Rice University is certified by ABET Engineering Accreditation Committee.
Bachelor of Arts in Civil and Environmental Engineering
The degree aims to provide students with flexible choices, allowing them to choose civil engineering or environmental engineering while studying other subjects at Rice University. Each study direction can be tailored according to the needs of each student, and the study can be selected on the premise of consulting the direction consultant of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and obtaining the consent of the consultant.
Civil engineering needs six core courses and seven courses related to specific fields. Environmental engineering needs five core courses and seven courses related to specific fields. Core courses and specific field courses account for 12- 13 (37 credits).
In addition, each student is responsible for meeting the allocation requirements of eight courses (24 credits), mathematics and science10-1courses (25 credits), and additional elective requirements. In short, you must complete 122 credits to get a degree.
2. Master's degree
At the master's level, Rice University offers two degrees: Master of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Master of Science.
Master of Civil and Environmental Engineering
The rapid development and globalization of human beings have caused serious damage to the natural environment and inadvertently caused inequality in the global social structure. Engineers have a special responsibility to help find solutions to these dilemmas.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Rice University trains students to improve the urban system, energy and water conservancy infrastructure. These are challenged by rapid changes and/or extreme events. The latter two include the increase in demand caused by population growth, aging and degradation, and related disasters caused by climate change.
Learning direction
The Master of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers two study directions: civil engineering, sustainable environmental engineering and design. According to the chosen direction, students will focus on improving the resilience of infrastructure and the efficiency of water and energy use, applying complex system analysis to improve and reduce risks, minimizing and mitigating the impact of human activities on the environment by using technological innovation, and finding interdisciplinary solutions to improve the quality of life and evaluate the return on investment of infrastructure.
Master of Science
Rice University offers a Master of Science degree in civil and environmental engineering. To get a degree, students must meet the following conditions:
A. complete at least 30 credits;
B. Obtain at least 24 credits from the approved postgraduate courses, and maintain a GPA of not less than 3.0(B). The color in the direction of environmental engineering and that must be selected from environmental chemistry, water treatment, hydrology and air quality. Students majoring in civil engineering, structure and mechanics must choose a course from structural engineering, mechanics, applied mathematics, structural dynamic system, system resilience and earthquake engineering.
C. Complete thesis research with at least 6 credits;
D. Select the thesis committee according to the requirements of the department, and engage in original research after consultation with the committee;
E. submit research papers and reply. Only after the Committee confirms that the paper is suitable for defense can it participate in defense. It usually takes two academic years (including summer vacation between academic years) to complete this degree.
The courses you have studied before can be used to replace these core courses.
Please note that students who intend to pursue a doctorate will not automatically get a master's degree when they become doctoral candidates if they fail to complete a satisfactory master's thesis.
3. Doctor
Rice University offers a doctorate in civil and environmental engineering. This degree offers civil engineering, environmental engineering and science. In order to obtain a degree, a degree in both directions must meet the following requirements:
A. Completed 90 credits except for Bachelor of Science (60 credits except for Master of Science) with honors;
B. pass the preliminary written test;
C. Complete the qualification examination of course assignments, research and related topics;
D. Complete a paper to prove the ability to engage in original academic research;
E. complete the public formal defense of the thesis and related topics.
After completing two semesters of course work, doctoral students in environmental engineering and science take part in the preliminary examination of department personnel organization. Doctoral students majoring in civil engineering take the preliminary examination after completing the course work for three semesters.
