Yunnan Normal University is a provincial key normal university with a long history and fine tradition. It is one of the 100 key universities built by the Ministry of Education and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government and one of the national basic capacity improvement projects in the central and western regions.

1937 After the full-scale outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University moved to Kunming to form The National SouthWest Associated University, which consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the School of Law and Business, and the Teachers College.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the three schools formed by 1946 were demobilized and returned to the north, and the whole system of teachers' colleges stayed in Kunming to run schools independently, which was named National Kunming Teachers' College.

1950 was renamed Kunming Normal University, and 1984 was renamed Yunnan Normal University.
