The "985 Project" refers to the major decision made by the China Production Party, People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council to build a world-class university at the turn of the century.

The first batch of ***9 "985 Project" universities were built, namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Harbin Institute of Technology. A total of 39 "985 Project" universities were approved for construction.

The school, formerly known as Fudan College, was founded in 1905. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning independently established by the people in China. 1952 after the adjustment of departments, the school has become a comprehensive university focusing on basic teaching and research of arts and sciences.

In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University, the fourth national medical college of Sun Yat-sen University founded by 1927, to form a new Fudan University.
