Introduction by Amartya Sen
Amartya Sen1933 was born in the Bay of Bengal, India, and 1959 received his doctorate from Cambridge University, England. Later, he taught in India, Britain and the United States. 1998 left Harvard University to be dean of Trinity College, Cambridge University, England. He wrote a human development report for the United Nations Development Programme and served as an economic adviser to former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. He won the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics for his contribution to welfare economics.
