Hohai University, abbreviated as "HHU", is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is characterized by water conservancy, with engineering as its advantage, and the coordinated development of economics, management, literature, science, law, art, teaching and agriculture. The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Water Resources, the State Oceanic Administration and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province have established universities.

The first batch of units in China with the right to award doctor's degree, master's degree and bachelor's degree have been selected into the national "11plan", "excellent engineer education and training plan", national undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training plan, national high-level university graduate program, national new engineering research and practice project, China government scholarship receiving institutions for overseas students, national college students' cultural quality education base and national universities.

The predecessor of Hohai University can be traced back to 19 15, when Zhang Jian founded Hohai Engineering College in Nanjing. It is the first institution of higher learning in China to train water conservancy talents. 1924 merged with the Engineering Department of National Southeast University to form Hohai University of Technology, 1927 merged with National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, and later renamed as National Central University and Nanjing University. 1952 Department of Water Resources, Nanjing University.

The Water Conservancy Department of Jiaotong University, Mutu Water Conservancy Group of Tongji University, Mutu Water Conservancy Group of Zhejiang University and East China Water Conservancy College merged to form East China Water Conservancy College. 1960 was recognized as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. 1985, restore the traditional school name "Hohai University".
