Tsinghua University's predecessor, Tsinghua Academy, was founded in 19 1 1. The school name "Tsinghua" originated from the school site "Tsinghua Campus", which was a preparatory school for studying in the United States founded by the Qing government. The funds for its establishment came from 1908, part of boxer indemnity returned by the United States.

Tsinghua University, referred to as "Tsinghua" for short, is a sub-ministerial system directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) and the central government, ranking among "21/project", "985 project" and "world-class university and first-class discipline".
