Hunan Agricultural University is a university (Class A) jointly established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Hunan Provincial People's Government. It is a national civilized campus and a first-class university in Hunan Province.

The school's predecessor was the Learning Institute founded by 1903, where Zhou Zhenlin, Huang Xing, Xu Teli and Mao Zedong taught successively.

1951March, Hunan Agriculture and Forestry College, which was developed from minor schools, merged with Agricultural College of Hunan University to form Hunan Agricultural College. President Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school in his own handwriting.

1994 changed its name to Hunan Agricultural University in March.
