Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, the Beijing Municipal People's Government and China Railway Corporation. It is a national "2 1 1 Project", "985 Project", "Innovation Platform for Dominant Subjects" and "Double-class" university.
The historical origin of Beijing Jiaotong University can be traced back to 1896. Its predecessor was the Institute of Railway Management founded by the Qing government. It is the first institution of higher learning in China to train management talents. The school has formed a complete discipline training system with information, management and other disciplines as the advantages, transportation science and technology as the characteristics, and the coordinated development of engineering, management, economics, science, literature, law and philosophy.
The school has two campuses, east and west, and is located in Haidian District, Beijing, which is known as the "academic resort", with a total area of nearly 1 1,000 mu. Full-time undergraduate students 17372, doctoral students 2954, master students 8434, part-time master students 1730, adult students 2350, foreign students 1389.

The school regards the construction of high-quality teachers as the key to improve the strength of running a school and vigorously implements the strategy of strengthening the school with talents. There are 3 160 faculty members in the school, including 2024 full-time teachers (associate senior and above titles 1504, master degree or above 1990).
There are 3 academicians of China Academy of Sciences, 9 academicians of China Academy of Engineering, 6 members of the subject evaluation group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, 7/kloc-0 teachers selected by the national talent plan, and 62 undergraduate majors are offered. 2 1 first-class doctoral program and 33 first-class master programs.
