What are the prerequisites for the autonomy of European universities in the Middle Ages?
European medieval universities refer to11~17th century institutions of higher learning that rose in European countries, and are the origin of modern higher education. The word university comes from the Latin Uni-versitas, which means "sum" and "union", that is, a joint group between student organizations or between student organizations and teacher organizations.

1 1 century, the feudal system in western Europe has been established, and agricultural production has risen slowly. With the increase of surplus agricultural products, handicrafts have been developed and gradually separated from agriculture, and commercial activities have gradually begun.

Full-time businessmen lived in one place, engaged in production and trade, and gradually formed a medieval city.

The general rise and development of cities, the increasingly frequent international trade and exchanges, and the Crusades spread Byzantine culture to the whole of Europe, which objectively promoted the development of European culture. These changes in social conditions made the original monastery schools and archbishop schools no longer meet the needs of social development. As a result, medieval universities appeared.

Through the investigation and analysis of the historical development process and institutional changes of universities around the world, this book tries to grasp the basic situation of the formation and development of medieval universities more accurately, not only analyzing the salary system of teachers in medieval universities, but also analyzing the relationship between the development of medieval universities and German universities in the late Middle Ages from the perspective of the evolution of university system.

In the mid-1990s, the author studied in Japan. What impressed me during my study abroad was the systematic basic research made by Japanese scholars in the field of educational research. In the field of higher education, the research of Japanese scholars is equally unforgettable.

What is particularly shocking is all kinds of work done by Japanese scholars in the field of world university history (including the translation of some classic works by European and American scholars in the field of university history, which can be seen from the appendices listed at the back of European medieval universities). Shocked, the author began to reflect on his academic accomplishment and research direction.

On the other hand, in the process of completing the doctoral thesis, in the face of various achievements in the development of Japanese university education, the author began to ask "what is the German university that has had a far-reaching impact on Japanese university education?" "How did universities before German universities form and develop?" ? Wait for questions.

Subsequently, the author came up with an idea: can we make a "long-term plan" to systematically sort out the historical development of world universities? European medieval universities are the first part of this plan.
