The School of Foreign Languages, formerly known as the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, was founded in 1927. Famous experts and scholars in history, such as Ye Gongchao, Liang Shiqiu, Qian Zhongshu and Xu Guozhang, have taught here. The Institute of Foreign Languages was established in May 20001year on the basis of the former Foreign Languages Department and College English Teaching Center. Now it has five teaching units: English Language and Literature Department, Business English Department, Japanese Language and Literature Department, French Language and Literature Department and College English Department. There are five institutions: Institute of Foreign Literature, Institute of Linguistics, Institute of Intercultural and Translation, Institute of Japanese Language and Culture and Institute of Foreign Language Teaching.

There are four majors in English (language and literature), business English, Japanese and French, and public foreign language courses such as English, Japanese, French and Spanish are offered to the whole school.
