On the evening of July, Li Gongpu and his wife went out. 10 or so, he passed Xueyuanpo in Qingyun Street on his way home. He was wounded by an agent of the Kunming station of the secret service with an American silent pistol. The bullet entered the abdomen from the lower back and passed out. He died of excessive blood loss at 5 am the next day. At the end of his life, he cursed "shameless" and shouted "I am democracy."

On the morning of July 15, Wen Yiduo went to the court of Yunnan University to attend the report on Li Gongpu's death. He was followed by spies as soon as he left home. At the meeting, Wen Yiduo exposed the fascist atrocities of the Kuomintang and made a famous "final speech". In the afternoon, he held a press conference in Democracy Weekly, which showed his solemn attitude against dictatorship and civil war. After the meeting, Wen and his eldest son returned to their dormitory in Xicangpo, The National SouthWest Associated University. Not far from home, the second group of agents who were followed were strafed by American submachine guns and killed by eight bullets on the spot. Wen was shot several times in order to protect his father and save him from danger.
