The school, formerly known as Tianjin University of Technology, began to recruit undergraduates in the name of Tianjin University of Technology in199, and was formally established in198 with the approval of the State Council. 1996, the former Tianjin Institute of Technology merged with the former Tianjin University Branch, Tianjin University Electromechanical Branch and Tianjin University Metallurgical Branch to form a new Tianjin Institute of Technology. Approved by the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Tianjin University of Technology in 2004.
