Bohai university's ace majors are computer science and technology, Chinese language and literature, elementary education, history, mathematics and applied mathematics, chemistry, food science and engineering, journalism, automation, food quality and safety, marketing, tourism management, physics, ideological and political education, etc., which are considered as the best majors.

Bohai university is a comprehensive university sponsored by Liaoning provincial government. It was awarded the title of "National College with Typical Experience in Graduate Employment" by the Ministry of Education and ranked among the top 50 universities in China. The school is located in Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, with Party Secretary Liu Yang and President Zhao Hui. The motto of the school is "learn more and see more, be harmonious but different".

As of September, 2022, the school has two campuses, Songshan Campus and Binhai Campus, covering an area of more than 2,250 mu, with a total construction area of 600,000 square meters and more than 200 full-time teachers. There are 20 secondary colleges, 53 undergraduate enrollment majors, 18 first-level disciplines, and 10 professional master's degree authorization points, covering economics, law, teaching, literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, agriculture, management, art and other disciplines.

On April 5, 2000, the former Jinzhou Normal University and the former Liaoning Business School were established. In April 2003, Jinzhou Teachers College was renamed bohai university.

By the end of 2022, bohai university ranked 268th in China University of Soft Science in 2022.
