Nanjing Normal University, located in Nanjing, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, was co-founded by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province. It is the first batch of key construction universities in the national "world-class discipline construction university", the national "2 1 1 project" and a high-level university construction university in Jiangsu Province. Selected as the country "11/plan".

The main source of the school can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902, which is one of the birthplaces of higher normal education in China. After that, it went through Liangjiang Excellent Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, Jiangsu University, National Central University and National Nanjing University.

As of May 20 18, Nanjing Normal University has 1 national and local joint engineering research centers, key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, key laboratories of the Ministry of Public Security, research bases of sports social sciences and sports culture of the State Sports General Administration, national research and training bases of women and gender, national research bases of college students' career development education, national theoretical research bases of civil policies and national key laboratories of Jiangsu Province.
