The Department of Bridge Engineering Science and Technology of Tongji University was established in 1952, which is one of the earliest two disciplines of bridge engineering in China universities. 1987 established the first department of bridge engineering in China universities, 1988 approved the establishment of the first national key laboratory in the field of civil engineering-the national key laboratory of civil engineering disaster prevention.

The Department of Civil Engineering, founded in 1926, is one of the oldest engineering departments in Tsinghua University.
