1999 in order to meet the needs of the society and promote the construction and development of disciplines, the Silk Institute was renamed the School of Materials Engineering of Suzhou University with the approval of the higher authorities.
In July 2008, due to the need of discipline construction, the College of Materials Engineering and the College of Chemical Engineering merged to form the Department of Materials and Chemical Engineering, and at the same time, the College of Textile and Clothing Engineering was established with the Textile Department of the College of Materials Engineering.
