How many 985 universities and schools are there in China?
There are 39 985 universities in China. The "985 Project" refers to the major decision made by the Chinese Production Party, People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council at the turn of the century to build a world-class university.

May 4 1998 "To realize modernization, China must have a number of first-class universities with world-class standards." The first batch of "985 Project" built nine universities.

Namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Harbin Institute of Technology. A total of 39 "985 Project" universities were approved for construction.

The first batch of nine institutions in the first phase is called C9, which mainly includes Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Harbin Institute of Technology.

Shaanxi 985 universities: xi Jiaotong University, Northwest A&F University, Northwestern Polytechnical University.

985 Universities in Hunan Province: Hunan University, Central South University, National University of Defense Technology.

Shanghai 985 Universities: Tongji University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, East China Normal University.

Sichuan 985 Universities: Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

Hubei 985 Universities: Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Jiangsu 985 Universities: Nanjing University, Southeast University.

Tianjin 985 University: Tianjin University and Nankai University.

985 Universities in Liaoning Province: Northeastern University, Dalian University of Technology.

Shandong 985 Universities: Shandong University, China Ocean University.

Guangdong 985 Universities: Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology.

Fujian 985 University: Xiamen University.

Zhejiang 985 University: Zhejiang University.

The first phase of the project includes the second batch of 26 985 universities, including Southeast University, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Tianjin University, Tongji University, Beijing Normal University, Jilin University, Xiamen University, Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology and Sichuan University.

In the second stage, four 985 universities will be built, namely, Minzu University of China, National University of Defense Technology, Northwest A&F University and East China Normal University.
