Extended Information Southern Medical University, headquartered in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, is the first university established in People's Republic of China (PRC), the only "Ministry-Provincial Joint Construction" university in Guangdong Province, and the "Key Construction University" of high-level universities in Guangdong Province.

In June 2003, in response to the adjustment and reform of the establishment system of the whole army, the Central Military Commission decided to hand over the first military medical university to the local government.

On May 29th, 2004, the General Office of the State Council issued the Reply of the General Office of the Central Military Commission on the Opinions on the Ownership of Four Military Colleges (Guo Ban Han [2004] No.40), and decided to put the First Military Medical University under the management of Guangdong Province and run its own school.

On August 24th, 2004, the handover ceremony of the first military medical university in Guangdong Province was held in the Military Medical Auditorium. The First Military Medical University of PLA was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed Southern Medical University.
