The Second Military Medical University is the key construction institution of the national "2 1 1 Project", the military "2 10 Project" and the former General Logistics Department "530 Project", the first batch of national "double-first-class" world-class discipline construction institutions, and the key construction institutions for military postgraduate training. It is one of the three units in the army that set up graduate schools. It is the first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding units in China and the first batch of universities offering eight-year medical education. It was selected into the "Excellent Doctoral Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the national postgraduate program for building high-level universities, the national life science and technology talent training base, and the foreign military medical student training base. Affiliated hospitals in Shanghai include Shanghai Changhai Hospital, Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, Dongfang Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital and Gong Li Hospital in Pudong New Area.

The Second Military Medical University has successively won the National Science and Technology Award 1, 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 4 National Natural Science Awards, National Science and Technology Progress and Innovation Team Award 1, 5 National Technology Invention Awards, 32 National Science and Technology Progress Awards and more than 600 second-class prizes at provincial and ministerial levels.
