University of Science and Technology Beijing is a national key university directly under the people of China and the Ministry of Education. It is a "double first-class" construction university, a national "2 1 1 Project" and "985 Engineering Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" construction university, the first batch of "three-all education" comprehensive reform pilot universities of the Ministry of Education, and the first batch of Beijing deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration universities.

The historical origin of University of Science and Technology Beijing can be traced back to 1895, the first mining and metallurgy discipline in China's modern history. 1952 school was jointly founded by the departments of mining and metallurgy of six famous universities in China, such as Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University, and was named Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Industry, which was the first institution of higher learning in iron and steel industry established in New China. 1960, renamed Beijing institute of iron and steel, was approved as a national key institution of higher learning. 1984, becoming one of the earliest universities in China to formally establish a graduate school.

1988, when Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel applied for renaming again, because Beijing Institute of Technology had been renamed Beijing Institute of Technology, the leaders of the State Council Office negotiated with the school leaders and some old professors and decided to rename it Beijing University of Science and Technology.

In 2022, University of Science and Technology Beijing established a new campus in Xiong 'an, which is located on the north side of Group 5 in the starting area of xiong'an new area, covering an area of about 2,450 mu. The master plan of Xiong 'an Campus was announced. The scheme was designed by Tsinghua University Architectural Design and Research Institute, and nearly 4,000 teachers, students and representatives from all walks of life participated in the voting.
