The former Bethune Medical University was founded by Marshal Nie in Tang County, Hebei Province on 1939. Norman bethune, a great internationalist fighter, took part in the establishment and teaching of this school. After the death of Comrade Bethune, in order to commemorate him, the school was renamed Bethune Medical University. After the founding of New China, it was renamed the First Military Medical University, and 1958 was renamed Jilin Medical University. 1978 Restore the name of Bethune Medical University. It was merged into Jilin University in 2000.
