Beijing Campus is located at the southern foot of Du Jun Mountain in Changping District, Beijing, with a total campus area of 496.5 mu. Karamay Campus is located in Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a campus area of more than 7,200 mu.

The predecessor of the school is Beijing Petroleum Institute, the first petroleum institution of higher learning in New China.
