The experimental middle school of Yunnan Normal University was founded in 1940, and it is a "affiliated school of National Southwest Associated University Teachers College". After the National Southwest Associated University was abolished, it was renamed as the middle school attached to Kunming Normal University and later changed to the middle school attached to Yunnan Normal University.

In August 2003, the high school affiliated to Yunnan Normal University moved to Kunming High-tech Zone. In order to revitalize state-owned assets, expand high-quality educational resources and meet the needs of the reform and development of basic education in Yunnan, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education and the Kunming Municipal Education Bureau, a completely state-owned and privately-run middle school, Yunnan Normal University Experimental Middle School, was established.

At present, the school has more than 60 classes and more than 5,000 students. Among them, there are 0/2 classes in senior high school/KLOC-and about 50 classes in junior high school.
