Dalian Minzu University is located in Jinzhou District, Dalian City, Liaoning Province. Directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and directly under the central ministries and commissions. It was jointly established by People's Republic of China (PRC) Ministry of Education, State Ethnic Affairs Commission, China Academy of Sciences, Liaoning Provincial People's Government and Dalian Municipal People's Government. It is a comprehensive national higher education institution focusing on engineering and applied disciplines.
It has been selected into the national pilot school of education system reform, the first batch of national college English teaching reform demonstration schools, the first batch of national graduate employment typical experience universities, the national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training program, and the first batch of new engineering research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education. Dalian University of Technology provides counterpart support to Dalian University for Nationalities, a member of CDIO Engineering Education Alliance.

In 2009, 20 14 and 20 19, the school was awarded the honorary title of "National Model Collective of National Unity and Progress" by the State Council for three consecutive times. 20 10 School was awarded by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 50 universities with typical experience in graduate employment. 20 15 was named "National Demonstration University of National Unity and Progress".
In 2020, it was once again approved as a "national demonstration unit for national unity and progress".
