The Medical College was established in 1950, with five undergraduate majors: clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, clinical medicine of Chinese and Western medicine, nursing and pharmacy. The academic system of clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine is five years, and the academic system of nursing and pharmacy is four years. Among them, the professional direction of clinical medicine obstetrics and gynecology and the professional direction of skin and venereal disease prevention and treatment have high influence both inside and outside the province. The College is qualified to recruit international students majoring in clinical medicine (English teaching) in China. Since 2006, it has enrolled students and taught in pure English. The college has a first-class doctoral program of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine, six first-class master programs of basic medicine, clinical medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine, public health and preventive medicine, pharmacy and traditional Chinese medicine, and two professional master programs of clinical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Clinical medicine of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine is a provincial key discipline, and gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology, hematology, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, orthopedics, urology and medical imaging are provincial key clinical specialties. It is the endoscopic training center of the Ministry of Health and the national vocational qualification training base for psychological counselors. At present, the college has more than 2,000 full-time undergraduates, nearly 300 master's and doctoral students, and 44 foreign students.
The college has departments of basic medicine, clinical medicine I, clinical medicine II, obstetrics and reproductive medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine, nursing and pharmacy. It also has Jiangsu Basic Medical Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, central and local clinical medical experimental centers and pharmaceutical comprehensive teaching laboratory. The college has 7 clinical medical schools, 9 affiliated hospitals and more than 30 teaching practice hospitals, including Jiangsu Subei People's Hospital and Yangzhou First People's Hospital.
The college attaches great importance to scientific research. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 50 national high-tech development plan projects, national key basic research development plan projects, national natural science foundation projects, provincial major bidding projects and other projects, and achieved a number of high-level scientific research achievements, resulting in remarkable social and economic benefits. The College has the editorial department of Journal of Clinical Practice, which is the core academic journal published in China and has won the "Outstanding Periodical Award of China Universities" for many years.
