What do eight of the three university programs mean?
Universities systematize and standardize Confucian political ethics, which is summarized as "three cardinal guides and eight items". The opening of "University" wrote: "The way of a university is to be well-known and close to the people, and stop at perfection." This is the so-called "Three Programmes". It points out the purpose of Confucianism with extremely concise sentences, that is, to improve moral consciousness, establish the concept of people-oriented and cultivate the ideal personality of perfection and beauty. In other words, Confucianism is the knowledge of learning how to be a man. In order to realize the purpose of Confucianism, universities put forward specific steps and methods: "Those who want virtue in ancient times should rule their country first. If you want to govern your country, you should unite your family first. If you want to keep your family together, you should trim your body first. If you want to cultivate yourself, you should be upright first. If you want to be right, be sincere first. If you want to be sincere, let him know first. Knowledge exists in things. The content is known, and the knowledge is sincere. Honesty and then the heart is right, the heart is right and then the body is repaired, the body is repaired and then the family is neat, the family is neat and then the country is ruled, and the country is flat. " This is the "eight items" of "respecting things, knowing things, being sincere, upright, cultivating oneself, keeping the family in order, governing the country and leveling the world". The three cardinal guides and eight items are unified, all of which highlight the theme of self-cultivation in Confucian governance. "University" fully shows the academic style of Confucian politics and ethics. "University" conveys the essence of Confucianism in the form of an outline, which is of great guiding significance to beginners and is appropriately called "the door of morality" by Song Confucianism.
