The University of Rochester was originally located in the American Hotel in niujie, downtown Rochester. 1853, when the campus moved eastward to the suburbs, it is now on University Avenue. Azariah Boody, a local businessman and congressman, donated 8 acres of land for the new campus;

Later, the school bought 17 mu of land from him to build a new campus. The University of Rochester kept and used this campus until the present River campus was completed on 1930.
