Early experience

1976, Feng Junqi was born in a village in Zhumadian, Henan. When he was very young, he often followed his father to read People's Daily and Henan Daily. Since then, Feng Junqi has gradually become interested in politics, especially politicians. His greatest hobby is reading biographies of leaders in bookstores.

When he was a graduate student, his major was world history, and the title of his master's thesis was "The Domestic Servant World of British nobles in the Middle Ages".

He entered Zhongxian County on the recommendation of his tutor Liu Xincheng, then president of Capital Normal University. Feng Junqi believes that "if we can go deep into the grass-roots political groups in China, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime fieldwork experience". Half a year later, with the help of Liu Xincheng and Peking University Organization Department, Feng Junqi successfully got the opportunity to work in a province, city and county for two years. According to the plan, in the first year, he was a deputy head of the township, and in the second year, he was an assistant to the county magistrate in the county government.

Zheng Yefu, his tutor from Peking University, also gave the greatest support. On March 7th, 2008, Feng Junqi boarded a train bound for a county with a box full of political science and sociology materials. "Don't have any fixed opinions, don't have any frames, keep your eyes open and observe more, find facts in practice and find the theme of the paper." Before he left, Zheng Yefu repeatedly explained.

Down to the village, for two weeks in a row, a dozen members of the village leadership took turns to make wine for the new deputy heads, and Feng Junqi vomited for half a month after drinking only one or two glasses. Someone gave him two boxes of "Quick-acting Jiuxin Pills" and "Danshen Dripping Pills", and explained that they were "essential drugs for officialdom".

When he first arrived in the county, Feng Junqi, who only received a monthly subsidy of 1000 yuan, was dressed simply. A colleague reminded him: "An official should wear a brand." Feng Junqi specially bought two T-shirts of "Seven Wolves" for this purpose, and gradually merged into the local officialdom in embarrassment. Most of the leading cadres in the village are also happy to chat with this "doctor from Beijing".

The following year, Feng Junqi was appointed as assistant to the county magistrate. During his two years on the job, Feng Junqi visited county and township cadres 16 1 person, including 26 veteran cadres who have been working in Zhongxian since 1978.

"In the 30 years of reform and opening up, what kind of group is the political elite at the grassroots level in China? What changes have this group experienced? What kind of political ecology and game rules are there inside them?" Feng Junqi wrote in the introduction of the paper, "As the largest cadre group in China, county and township cadres are directly related to the stability of the country and the promotion of reform."

After returning to Beijing, Feng Junqi took part in graduation defense, and his doctoral thesis was completed in Zhongxian County. "As a former cadre of Zhongxian County, I really should sing a hymn of Zhongxian County, but singing hymns is not academic research, and it is not helpful to reality and reform. I hope that the cadres in Zhongxian County can understand my research. " Feng Junqi said. On the printed title page, there is only one sentence: "Dedicated to Zhongxian cadres."

Anecdotes of characters

doctoral dissertation

Feng Junqi, a doctor of sociology in Peking University, worked in an agricultural county in central China for two years and wrote a 250,000-word doctoral thesis, trying to restore the grass-roots officialdom ecology in this county and even in a broader sense. He collects false evidence about the age and education of officials; Expose the county's false political achievements since the reform and opening up; I even collected the resumes of three cadres above the metre level in this county 10 13, looking for the "mystery" on their way to promotion. The phenomenon of "political family" also surfaced in this search. He also tried to restore the secret "tribute system" and "buying and selling officials" on the way to official promotion, and approached the "most secret" officials of the Commission for Discipline Inspection for many times to inspect the "uncapping measures".

With some chapters quoted and disclosed by the media, this paper, which took more than a year to complete, entered the public eye. Some commentators said: the county governs, and the world is safe. This grass-roots political research, starting from 1978, provides a true and cruel sample for China's future reform path choice.

This newspaper has become popular.

This article entitled "The Life History of Xinhua Copying Industry" presents a fascinating sociological field investigation. Through detailed data and interviews, this paper shows how Xinhua, a poverty-stricken county in Loudi, Hunan Province, has developed a nationwide copying industry network by virtue of its blood relationship, geography and social structure, and constantly pushed the industry to a new height. Nearly 0.2 million/200 thousand new employees are engaged in copying-related work throughout the country.

Key points of learning

Generally speaking, it is difficult for the papers under study to have an immediate impact on society. However, a paper "The Life History of Xinhua Copying Industry" written by Dr. Feng Junqi from Peking University became popular on the Internet and won favorable comments from netizens. Some netizens praised: This is the real "conscience paper". This paper, published in 2007, obtained a lot of first-hand information and interviews through sociological field investigation, put forward a phenomenon, made a theoretical explanation, made a unique observation on the social structure of China at present, and discussed the influence of blood relationship and geography on the modernization process of China. In fact, this is not the first time that Feng Junqi has been angry. A few years ago, he caused widespread concern in society with a doctoral thesis "Zhong County Cadres" describing the ecology of grass-roots officialdom. The same as this one, the author made great efforts in the investigation and research in the early stage of the thesis, and the content of the thesis was informative, which attracted the attention of the society. In contrast to the "fire" of these two papers, another kind of papers is also very "fire" in recent years: either copying others word for word; Either the scenery is wonderful and it is built on a castle in the air. It's all "fire", but it's true and false. The former is "samadhi true fire", and the refined is real gold; The latter is a virtual fire, which reflects academic impetuousness. Unfortunately, there are too few real fires and too many virtual fires now. For students, learning is undoubtedly a compulsory course. Graduation thesis, an academic summary of a learning stage, should go all out and be carefully prepared. But nowadays, cheating and plagiarism in graduation thesis seem to be commonplace, and writing a thesis has become a "paper". Even with the technology of graduation thesis duplicate checking software, it can't stop the wind of copying and pasting. Indeed, it takes considerable determination to write a paper in a down-to-earth manner nowadays. There are many social temptations, and there is great pressure to find an internship, a job and a professional title. Many young people calculate the "time cost" and feel that it is unnecessary to spend so much energy on a paper. But in fact, the harvest of a paper is far more than that. It is not only an academic exposition, but also a careful polishing of the mind. The birth of a paper, from selecting a topic, looking for information to argumentation and revision, is accompanied by the solution of a complex problem, and it is impossible without some meditation. Some people say that writing a graduation thesis is like getting pregnant in October. Some scholars in the Qing Dynasty once said: "The key to learning lies in centering; The effectiveness of learning is in the heart. " Learning is also a kind of practice. Only by calming down and keeping your feet on the ground can you study well. In fact, the truth of life is universally applicable, so is learning, and so is being a man and doing things?
