Central South University was formed in 2000 by the merger of the former Central South University of Technology, Changsha Railway Institute and Hunan Medical University. It can be traced back to Hunan Higher Institute of Technology founded by 1903 and Xiangya Medical College founded by 19 14.
It is a comprehensive research university focusing on engineering and medicine, covering science, literature, law, economics, management, philosophy, education, history, art and radiation military science.

Central South University of Technology, formerly known as Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (1952), enjoys a world-renowned mining discipline and is known as "Mining and Metallurgy Huangpu" in China. Changsha Railway Institute, formerly known as Central South Institute of Architecture and Engineering (1953), enjoys the reputation of "Troika" in domestic civil engineering. Hunan Medical University, formerly known as Xiangya Medical College (19 14), is the earliest institution of higher learning of western medicine in China, enjoying the reputation of "Xiangya in the south and Concord in the north".

As of 20 18 and 12, Central South University has a graduate school, Xiangya Medical College, 3/kloc-0 secondary colleges and 107 undergraduate majors. It has five directly affiliated hospitals, namely Xiangya Hospital, Xiangya Second Hospital, Xiangya Third Hospital, Xiangya Stomatological Hospital and Xiangya Fifth Hospital, three non-directly affiliated hospitals, including Hunan Cancer Hospital, Haikou People's Hospital and Zhuzhou Central Hospital, and 24 clinical teaching bases.
