Asteroids are one of the celestial bodies that can be nominated according to the wishes of discoverers and recognized by international organizations, thus gaining international recognition. The seriousness, permanence and invariance of asteroid naming make it a world-recognized honor. This honor is generally only awarded to units or individuals who have made significant contributions to the country's economy, society, astronomy and other undertakings. Previously, there were only five asteroids named after universities in China, namely Peking University Star, Nanjing University Star, Beijing Normal University Star, Shandong University Star and China University of Science and Technology Star.
In order to thank the research team of Harbin Institute of Technology for its outstanding contribution to the FAST project, the asteroid 1996ln discovered by Schmidt CCD Asteroid Project Team of National Astronomical Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences on1June 7, 996 was named "Harbin Institute of Technology", with its international permanent number of 55838 and the epoch of kissing and cutting.
The theme of "Harbin Institute of Technology" sculpture is "Star Trek". The huge metal ring in the vertical direction symbolizes the interstellar orbit. The ground plane simulates the vast starry sky through paved and inlaid metal belts. The metal balls on it represent the named "Harbin Institute of Technology", which runs in the orbit of plane and space, and the three components together form a beautiful interstellar picture. By creating the concept of "Star Trek", the sculpture tries to tell people about the indissoluble bond between Harbin Institute of Technology and China's starry sky exploration and its outstanding contribution in related fields.
The ceremony was presided over by Sun, Vice President of Harbin Institute of Technology. Yan Jun, director of the National Astronomical Observatory, read out the naming bulletin of the International Astronomical Union on Harbin Institute of Technology. The communique pointed out that "Harbin Institute of Technology, founded in 1920, is a" 21/engineering "key university in China. It is a university with distinctive aerospace characteristics and interdisciplinary advantages, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of China's aerospace science and technology. "
Wang Shuquan, Party Secretary of Harbin Institute of Technology, delivered a speech at the ceremony. He said that the asteroid named today was discovered on1June 7, 996, which is also the 76th anniversary of the founding of Harbin Institute of Technology. It can be said that naming such an asteroid "Harbin Institute of Technology" has not only been highly recognized and strongly supported by the National Astronomical Observatory and all walks of life, but also a great honor for Harbin Institute of Technology and a great encouragement to all adults of Harbin Institute of Technology. From today on, every adult from all corners of the country will look up at the night sky and feel more proud and moved. He said that the "Great Star of Harbin Institute of Technology" will inspire Harbin Institute of Technology to explore the truth of science with a more persistent spirit, and will also carry the glorious tradition of Harbin Institute of Technology and shine with the sun and the moon. The sculpture "Star of Harbin Institute of Technology" located here will surely witness the new achievements made by Harbin Institute of Technology in the process of building a world-class university and in the journey of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!
Also present at the ceremony was Xue Suijian, Assistant Director of the National Astronomical Observatory; Zhou Xu, chief researcher of BATC Sky Survey Group of National Astronomical Observatory and representative of discoverer of Harbin Institute of Technology; Wang Jiali, senior engineer and discoverer of BATC Sky Survey Group of National Astronomical Observatory, represents Harbin Institute of Technology; Wang, Vice Chairman of Heilongjiang Provincial Political Consultative Conference and President of Harbin Institute of Technology Alumni Association; Academician Shen Shizhao and Xie Lili of Harbin Institute of Technology; Yang, former president of Harbin Institute of Technology; Former Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Harbin Institute of Technology Qiang and Gu Yinsheng. Representatives of alumni, faculty and students from Harbin Institute of Technology at home and abroad attended the ceremony.

Since 1994, astronomers in China have put forward the proposal and overall engineering scheme of building a 500-meter spherical radio telescope in Guizhou karst depression in the west of China through continuous exploration. The concept of FAST project, with China people's independent intellectual property rights, has created a new mode of building a giant radio telescope, which will become a single-aperture telescope in the world after completion. As a multidisciplinary basic research platform, FAST enables human beings to observe the dark matter and dark energy at the edge of the universe and look for the first generation of celestial bodies. At the same time, China's space TT&C capability can be extended from geosynchronous orbit to the outer edge of the solar system. In July 2007, the National Development and Reform Commission officially approved the establishment of the FAST project. At present, researchers are conducting more comprehensive and in-depth theoretical and technical research and experimental model verification for the detailed design, future construction, operation and maintenance of FAST. The whole project is expected to be completed in 20 16.
The research team led by Academician Shen Shizhao and Professor Fan Feng from the Space Structure Research Center of Harbin Institute of Technology has been involved in the pre-research, feasibility study and preliminary design of FAST project since 2003, and has presided over many important topics related to FAST structural technology. This series of achievements has provided important technical support for promoting the establishment of FAST project. Theoretical analysis and series of tests have accumulated valuable first-hand information for the structural analysis, design, construction and test of the integral cable net of fast active reflector. In view of the excellent work and important role played by the research team of Harbin Institute of Technology in the FAST project, the National Astronomical Observatory, the construction unit of the FAST project, listed Harbin Institute of Technology as the first technical cooperation unit, and Academician Shen Shizhao was hired as a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the project. Professor Fan Feng and Associate Professor Qian Hongliang were hired as the chief engineer and deputy chief engineer of structural system respectively, responsible for the research on key technologies of FAST engineering structural system.
