The name of Fudan University is taken from "Sun and Moon shine brightly, Dan Fudan Xi" in The Great Biography of Shangshu. Founded in 1905, formerly known as Fudan University, 19 17 was named Fudan University. It is the first institution of higher learning independently established by the people of China. The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University Medical College founded in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University merged.
