The source is Sanjiang Normal School, founded in 1902. Since then, it has been renamed Nanjing University on 1950 after historical periods such as Liangjiang Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University and National Nanjing University.

1952, in the adjustment of colleges and universities in China, Nanjing University adjusted some departments such as engineering, agronomy and normal education, and later merged with the College of Arts and Sciences of Jinling University founded by 1888, and was still named Nanjing University.
