Shanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, formerly known as College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Shanxi Medical College, was founded in 1978. 1982 was approved by the State Council, and 1989 was established by the former State Education Commission. He was awarded a master's degree in 2000.

In 2003, it began to jointly train doctoral students with many universities. 20 15 became a university established by Shanxi Provincial People's Government and state administration of traditional chinese medicine. In May 20 17, it was renamed Shanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In the same year, it was recognized as a doctor's degree awarding unit in Shanxi Province and built a university together.

The school is the first batch of pilot universities for the reform of the education and training plan for excellent doctors (Chinese medicine) in the Ministry of Education. It recommends excellent fresh graduates to attend graduate universities without taking the test, the "5+3" integrated enrollment college for Chinese medicine majors, the China Municipal Government Scholarship Training College, and the Shanxi Provincial Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Demonstration College.
