The school's predecessor can be traced back to Qiongtai Academy in the forty-fourth year of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty (1705). 1952 was renamed Hainan Normal University in the adjustment of colleges and universities. 1986, Hainan Normal University resumed. 1999 merged with Hainan Education College to establish a new Hainan Normal College. In 2007, it was renamed Hainan Normal University.

As of April 2022, official website shows that the school has two campuses, Longkunnan and Guilin Yang, covering an area of about 3 100 mu. 24 colleges and 67 undergraduate majors; There are 2 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 5 first-level disciplines authorized by doctoral degree, 9 first-level disciplines authorized by master degree 19, and 3 master degree authorization points 13; Full-time teachers and researchers 1342, more than 20,000 full-time students (including undergraduate students19,000 and graduate students 2,000).
