National University of Defense Technology is located in Changsha, Hunan Province, ranking first among military schools. The construction and development of schools have always been highly valued by the state and the army. It is one of the key construction projects in the First Five-Year Plan 156 and one of the 20 key universities in China identified by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

National University of Defense Technology is the first institution in the State Council with the right to award master's and doctoral degrees, one of the first batch of 22 pilot graduate schools in China, the first institution to enter the national "2 1 1 Project" construction plan, the only institution in the national "985 Project" construction, and the only institution supported by the first round of national "double first-class" construction.
