The South Asia Institute of Sichuan University, formerly known as the Indian Research Office of Sichuan University, was established on 1964 with the approval of the former Foreign Affairs Office and the Ministry of Higher Education of the State Council in accordance with the instructions of President Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai on strengthening the study of foreign issues. 1978, the laboratory was expanded to South Asia Institute. 200 1 Approved by the Ministry of Education, South Asia College of Sichuan University became one of the key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education 100. At present, there are four research rooms for South Asian Studies, namely, South Asian economic development, South Asian diplomatic security, South Asian social culture and the relationship between China and South Asia. In addition, it has cooperated with the Research Center for Cooperation and Development in South Asia and Western China, the Pakistan Research Center and the China Tibet and South Asia Research Center. Since 1982, the institute has trained graduate students majoring in world history in the direction of South Asian history, and since 1985, it has trained graduate students majoring in world economy in the direction of South Asian economic research. 200 1, awarded a master's degree in international relations and a doctorate in economic research in Central and South Asia in the world economy. In the long-term teaching and scientific research practice, the college has formed the following four clear, stable, distinctive and advantageous research directions: first, the direction of international economic relations with Professor Winford as the subject leader; Second, the relationship between major powers and the direction of international security with Professor Zhang Li as the academic leader; Third, the direction of international social and cultural relations with Professor Li Tao as the academic leader; Fourthly, the trend of foreign relations of South Asian countries with Professor Jidong Chen as the academic leader.
Direction of international economic relations. Relying on the South Asia Institute of Sichuan University, the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, and the World Economics Major of the School of Economics of Sichuan University, this direction attaches importance to the theoretical and practical research of international economic relations, especially the research on foreign economic relations of South Asian countries, and has achieved a large number of important research results. He has published a series of monographs, such as China-India Economic and Trade Guide, World Trade Organization and India's Economic Development, Towards South Asia, Research on India's Economic Globalization, Research on China's Southwest Trade with India, and Tibet's Exploitation of South Asian Market and Its Particularity, and published dozens of related academic papers.
The relationship between major powers and the trend of international security. This direction pays close attention to the international hot issues in the fields involved, and in combination with China's strategic concerns, focuses on the diplomatic and security strategies of major countries in South Asia, the strategic relationship between China and China, and the neighboring countries. In recent years, a series of valuable research achievements have been published, including International Politics: Theory and Practice, Indian Prime Minister Nehru, India's Diplomacy and Security in the Post-Cold War Period, Tagore in World Civilization, and China's Western Development. Actively promote academic exchanges with overseas countries, go to India, Pakistan, the United States, Sweden and other countries for academic exchanges and establish academic ties. In 2004, the "International Symposium on the Development of South Asia and Western China" attended by South Asian ambassadors to China and domestic scholars and officials was successfully held. Combined with China's strategic concerns and international hot issues, it has provided more than 20 research reports for government decision-making departments and received good social effects and feedback.
Direction of international cultural exchange. This study focuses on the religion and culture in South Asia, and the religious and cultural exchanges and contacts between China and South Asia. While attaching importance to the theoretical research of religious culture, it especially highlights the research on the international exchange of religious culture in South Asian countries. In this direction, the Ministry of Education has carried out research on major topics such as Tibetan Buddhism in South Asia, Indian ethnic issues, Hindu nationalism, etc., and achieved a number of important research results such as the study of modern Indian caste system and secularization in India, published dozens of relevant academic papers, and provided a large number of applied research reports to relevant departments, which have been affirmed and praised by academic circles and relevant departments.
The trend of South Asian countries' foreign relations. The research direction focuses on the development of foreign policy and foreign relations of South Asian countries, focusing on the political and diplomatic relations, foreign trade relations and regional cooperation, as well as bilateral and multilateral relations with China. The study of India-Pakistan diplomatic relations has formed outstanding advantages. The research direction has been completed and major research projects of the Ministry of Education are under way, such as the study of regional economic cooperation between China, India, Myanmar and Bangladesh, the study of India-Pakistan relations, and the study of the development prospects of regional cooperation in South Asia. He has made a series of research achievements, such as "Research on India's Foreign Relations, Democratization Wave and Economic Development of South Asian Countries-India-Pakistan Studies", and published dozens of related academic papers, which have been fully affirmed and praised by the academic circles.
Since 20 14, the South Asia Institute of Sichuan University has enrolled new postgraduate students majoring in frontier politics, including frontier and frontier security, and cooperative development between frontier areas and neighboring countries.
