"2 1 1 engineering university", that is, the construction project of about 100 colleges and universities and a number of key disciplines oriented to 2 1 century, was officially launched in 1995 after being approved by the State Council.

The first phase of "985 Engineering University" was first implemented in Peking University and Tsinghua University. Implementing "985 Project University" is an important decision made by China Party, China people and the State Council at the turn of the century.

Among nearly 40 985 engineering universities in China, Tsinghua University ranks first, Peking University ranks second and China University of Science and Technology ranks third. Among more than 0/00 engineering universities in China, Tsinghua University ranks first, Peking University ranks second and China University of Science and Technology ranks third.

Double first-class universities are a "monopoly" of 985 University and 2 1 1 University. Double first-class project is the most important higher education project in China today. After the implementation of the double-class university construction project, it has actually replaced the previous 2 1 1 project and 985 project.

There are two types of double first-class universities, one is to build a number of world-class universities, and the other is to build a number of world-class disciplines. The number of the former is relatively small and the number of the latter is relatively large.

At present, there are 42 first-class universities, including 36 A-class universities and 6 B-class universities. In contrast, there are as many as 95 universities with world-class disciplines, and the total number of first-class disciplines built and cultivated is as high as 465. Therefore, at this stage, people pay more attention to the construction of world-class universities, especially the construction of class A world-class universities.
