Changchun university of science and technology, formerly known as Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, was founded by China Academy of Sciences at 1958. It is the first institution of higher learning in New China to train optical professionals. After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has now become a provincial key university in Jilin Province with distinctive photoelectric characteristics and national defense characteristics.

The school has been affiliated to China Academy of Sciences, National Defense Science and Technology Commission, Fifth Machinery Department, State Machinery Industry Commission, Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry, and China Ordnance Industry Corporation. 1999 was transferred to Jilin Province to be in charge of it, and it was jointly established with National Defense Science, Technology and Industry Commission. In 2002, it was renamed changchun university of science and technology; In 2004, it was identified as a provincial key university.
