There are 39 "985" universities in China, but these universities were not built at the same time. Tsinghua Peking University started the pilot project as early as 1998. On the whole, the second-phase 985 colleges and universities lay particular stress on majors, and their comprehensive strength lags behind that of the first-phase 985 colleges and universities.

In 20 16, the government declared several 985 documents invalid, and in 20 17, a "double-class" university was launched. In the list of double first-class universities, there are 42 first-class universities, including 36 A-class universities, 6 B-class universities, and all the original 39 985 universities are on the list.

From 39 985 universities to 42 double-class universities, domestic universities have experienced more than ten years of development, and three universities have come from behind. Zhengzhou University, Yunnan University and Xinjiang University were originally only 2 1 1 universities, and now they are among the first-class construction universities in Class B ... China Agricultural University, National University of Defense Technology, Minzu University of China and East China Normal University are all 985 universities in the second phase, all of which are on the list of 36 A-class double-class universities in 20 17, indicating that they keep pace with the times in the development of 2 1 century, and the educational strength of these four universities is officially recognized.
