Is it reasonable for the Ministry of Education to increase the burden on college students?
On June 22, 2008, Minister of Education Chen Baosheng pointed out that the phenomenon of "studying hard in middle schools and having a happy university" in China's education should be reversed, and it is necessary to "reduce the burden" for primary and secondary school students and "increase the burden" for college students.

Chen Baosheng believes that undergraduate education should return to common sense, duty, original heart and dream, and take "educating people" as its fundamental task.

Chen Baosheng explained that returning to common sense means that students should study hard; Returning to duty means that teachers should devote themselves to teaching and educating people; Returning to the original heart means that colleges and universities should devote themselves to training builders and successors; Returning to the dream means that higher education should strive to realize the dream of serving the country and strengthening the country through education.

To this end, Chen Baosheng demanded to enhance the academic challenge of college students, reasonably increase the difficulty of undergraduate courses, expand the depth of courses, expand the selectivity of courses, stimulate students' learning motivation and professional interest, and truly turn "water courses" into deep, difficult and challenging "golden courses".

"Undergraduate education is a key stage for young students to grow into talents. The university leaders will focus on the undergraduate course first, the teachers will concentrate on the undergraduate course first, the school resources will be allocated first, and the teaching conditions will be used first. " Chen Baosheng said.

He also demanded that the teaching methods and incentive mechanism should be innovated first, the core competitiveness and teaching quality should first appear in the undergraduate course, the development strategy and school-running concept should first be practiced in the undergraduate course, and the core value system should first be established in the undergraduate course.

In addition, Chen Baosheng emphasized that teachers' morality and style should be regarded as the first criterion for evaluating teachers' quality, teaching quality should be regarded as an important basis for evaluating teachers' professional and technical positions, and teaching achievements such as teaching norms, classroom teaching effects and teaching reform research should be evaluated in multiple dimensions, and a one-vote veto system for undergraduate teaching evaluation should be implemented in the promotion of teachers' professional and technical positions.

"The first duty of a teacher is to teach and educate people, and professors should teach and educate people. If you don't teach, you are not a professor. " Chen Baosheng said.
